OneBlood brings ‘Big Red Bus’ to One Senior Place in Viera June 10

(VIERA, FL)  May 28, 2020 – Viera-based One Senior Place, the Experts in Aging, will host a blood drive with free COVID-19 antibody testing on Wednesday, June 10 from 10:00 AM through 4:00 PM at 8085 Spyglass Hill Road, 32940.  OneBlood will park their signature ‘Big Red Bus’ in the parking lot of the Viera marketplace for seniors during the half-day event. Those who donate blood can find out if they have the COVID-19 antibody within approximately 48 hours. The FDA-approved antibody test will indicate if your immune system has produced antibodies to the COVID-19 virus, regardless of whether you ever showed symptoms. Identification is required and donors must be at least 16 years of age. In addition, donors will receive a free wellness checkup, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, iron count and cholesterol screening. Donors will be able to see their results approximately 48 hours after donating and can be notified by email or by logging into their OneBlood donor portal. All donors must make an appointment to donate. To schedule your appointment, visit the OneBlood website at the following link, https://donor.oneblood.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/957590. The antibody test is NOT a COVID-19 diagnostic test. Positive test results from OneBlood do not confirm infection or immunity. For more information about the donation process, call OneBlood at call 1-888-936-6283.

In addition to testing for the antibody, OneBlood will be identifying additional people who can be COVID-19 convalescent plasma donors. COVID-19 antibody testing will also provide important statistical information to public health officials. OneBlood is working closely with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida Surgeon General Scott Rivkees M.D., to provide statistics on the number and the geographical location of people testing positive for COVID-19 antibodies.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website, antibody tests check your blood by looking for antibodies, which can show if you had a past infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies are proteins that help fight off infections and usually provide protection against getting that disease again (immunity).

Blood is essential to life. Blood circulates through our body and delivers essential substances like oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells. There is no substitute for blood. It cannot be made or manufactured. Generous blood donors are the only source of blood for patients in need of a blood transfusion.
