Ready, Set, Medicare! Q & A with One Senior Place Director, Kathi Ridner

Ready Set Medicare ad flyer1.) When does open enrollment begin for Medicare?

Open Enrollment for Medicare is October 15th through December 7th, 2015. This is the window of time during which changes can be made to coverage, which will go into effect January 1, 2016.

2.) Must people pre-register for the genetic testing?

Medicare has recently approved coverage for the genetic testing that is being offered by Suntree Diagnostics. This specific testing uses an individual’s DNA to determine which prescription medications will be most effective for them. For example, there may be 3 or 4 medications that can lower cholesterol, but based on your DNA only one of them may work for you. So, instead of ‘trying’ a medication for 3 or 4 months only to realize that it isn’t effective and then ‘trying’ another one, your physician can prescribe the most effective medication immediately, with no guess work. The pre-registration forms help to facilitate this process more smoothly since a signature by the primary care physician is needed by Medicare.
