First performed nearly 2500 years ago in ancient Greece, Antigone comes to the stage in Brevard as a production by theatre students on the Cocoa campus of Eastern Florida State College. Audiences can catch a performance on Friday, Saturday and Sunday over two weekends, October 25, 26, 27 and November 1, 2 and 3 on the main stage of the Simpkins Fine Arts Center at 1519 Clearlake Road.  Directed by Jeanine Henry, Director of Theatre Arts for the Department of Performing and Visual Arts, the minimally staged Greek tragedy was adapted by Emily Mann from the play by Sophocles. After a bloody civil war in Thebes, the ascending king orders that the fallen soldiers of the vanquished side remain unburied. Antigone defies this edict, choosing to bury her brother, claiming that her allegiance is to a higher law – that of love. This modern adaptation of an ancient Greek tragedy raises timely questions about speaking truth to power and the consequences when leaders refuse to listen. The defiant and independent Antigone is played by Morgan Forehand in the title role, while Aska Cogburn is King Creon of Thebes. A portion of ticket sales for the 90-minute continuous show will be used to support the college’s Jack Carroll Theatre Scholarship fund.

The Friday and Saturday performances of Antigone are at 7:30 PM, with Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM.
