Chaplain-Columnist at Advent Lutheran Church, Melbourne Beach April 27

NBurkes_2014_QTR(Melbourne Beach, FL) – More than a million people read words by Norris Burkes every week.  His thought-provoking and often humorous column, “Spirituality in Everyday Life,” had its genesis on the Space Coast and is carried by dozens of newspapers nationwide.  The chaplain-columnist will return to Brevard County for “An Afternoon With Norris Burkes” on Sunday, April 27th at Advent Lutheran Church, Grace Campus, 1805 Oak Street in Melbourne Beach, 32913.  The free 3:00 PM outdoor event will feature an address by Burkes, along with food trucks and live Christian music by the band Non-Fiction.  Attendees are asked to bring a blanket or lawn chair for the festival-style event.  Chaplain Burkes’ presentation, “Praying for the Miracle,” will address the difficulty in asking God for miracles, including questions such as: Does prayer work? – Why pray? – How do I pray? – Who hears my prayers?  The syndicated columnist will autograph his award-winning book, “No Small Miracles,” which details his experiences as a pediatric chaplain, after the presentation.  Chaplain Burkes will also preach at the 6:00 PM service, at the same location.  For more information, call (321) 727-1724.

Pastor Marie Duquette is the primary pastor at the Grace campus of Advent Lutheran Church.  A former journalist, Pastor Marie feels a kinship with Norris Burkes.  They both use stories from their experiences to help listeners connect their own lives to the biblical stories and consider how God is acting in their lives today.

“We are thrilled to be hosting An Afternoon with Norris Burkes,” said Duquette.  “ChaplainBurkes brings a warm message of hope to over a million people every week and it is a point of pride to many local residents that he began writing his column while stationed at Patrick Air Force Base. We’re particularly grateful to be able to host this event and I am looking forward to leading worship with him and hearing his stories at both three o’clock and our six o’clock service.”

Pastor Marie in Melbourne Beach, along with Sr. Pastor Dave Jahn in Advent’s Suntree location, form a leadership team for the newly merged church that is working to help their membership grow in faith and foster a stronger sense of community.  They are joined by Sister Michelle Collins, a Lutheran Deaconess who grew up in Kenya and directs “faith formation” for all ages at both locations.  For more information about Advent Lutheran Church in Suntree and Melbourne Beach, call (321) 727-1724.
