christmas seniorsThe holidays are a time for joy and happiness, but there are safety hazards that come with the territory that you should be aware of.

The holidays represent an invitation to partake in all kinds of fun activities, from putting up decorations and stringing lights to lighting candles and cooking delicious food. As you’re preparing for the holiday season, however, it’s important to be mindful of some common seasonal safety hazards.

In order to help seniors prepare for the holidays, One Senior Place Greater Orlando will be hosting Home for the Holidays: Safety for Seniors on Thursday, December 17 from 2:30 to 4 p.m.  Join us for this informative seminar on home safety tips for seniors.  Some of the topics that will be covered in more detail during the seminar focus on the risks and hazards that are most prevalent around the holidays and that many of us tend to overlook.

For example, did you know that you’re more likely to trip and fall in your home over the holidays because of the extra decorations (cords, trees, etc.) you put up? And did you know that fire hazards lurk everywhere because of the frayed cords, cracked lamp holders and loose connections associated with decorations? As the weather gets colder, we all love our space heaters … but if you don’t use them correctly, they represent a major fire hazard.

Another critical topic that will be discussed during the seminar is consumer fraud. As people buy presents and other holiday-related items — whether in stores or online — theft (and in particular identity theft) becomes more of a risk. We will discuss what to look out for, outline how to best protect yourself, and provide some local resources that can help you avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

Join us this Thursday, December 17 and make this holiday season a safe one.
