One Senior Place – A Taste of Senior Living

BREVARD — 2023

BREVARD COUNTY — The beginning of a new year is often a time for reflection and reevaluation. We resolve to change or grow across all aspects of our lives and reassess our current plans to ensure we’re on the right track or adjust for changing times. As family dynamics and personal needs fluctuate, so do facets of daily living which often include the family home itself.

Years ago, there weren’t many living accommodation options for seniors. Today, that is no longer the case. However, while having lots of options to choose from is a definite plus, it can be overwhelming to make the right choice.

With that in mind, One Senior Place, the Experts in Aging, and Palm Cottages Assisted Living & Memory Care facility presents Senior Living Options Day: A Taste of Senior Living. The free event takes place on Friday, February 10th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Center for Collaboration at Space Coast Health Foundation located at 1100 Rockledge Blvd (U.S. Hwy1).

“Choosing the “right” housing for a senior is one of the most important decisions a family caregiver might be asked to make,” said Dr. Rosemary Laird, Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Geriatrics, Florida State University School of Medicine. The choice can prove challenging when you consider their quality of life, factoring in health, personal preferences, financial resources, and family logistics. Add to that the facility type, availability, and cost, and you can see how daunting the task of choosing a senior’s home space can be.

Does a loved one need help with physical activities? Do they need lite supervision or more hands-on support and care? And aside from the medical, structural, and financial components of one’s living arrangements, there’s the emotional element as well. Our home is our safe haven and making a move to a new home – one in which we feel safe, secure, comfortable, loved, and cared for – can be stressful, if not traumatic. “Everyone likes the idea of living at home the rest of their lives,” said Eden Cook, One Senior Place Director, “But our changing health and care needs mean that may not always be possible.”

It’s good to know that retirement communities have come a long way and Brevard County has no shortage of living options available for seniors and their families. Over a dozen of these facilities will have representatives on hand to answer all your questions at the Senior Living Options Day event. Participating communities include Sonata Viera; Alura Senior Living; The Brennity of Melbourne; Buena Vida Estates, CRRC; Autumn House; Chateau Madeleine Senior Living; Discovery Village at Melbourne; The Fountains of Melbourne; Inspiritas of West Melbourne; Melbourne Terrace Rehabilitation Center; Viera Health and Rehabilitation Center; Market Street at Viera; Serenades Memory Care; Victoria Landing Assisted Living & Memory Care; and Shell Harbor Retirement Community.

A choice is usually difficult because of the unknowns. The more Who, What, When, Where, and Why you don’t have answers for, the more intimidating a choice can feel. But in a couple of hours, attendees of the Senior Living Options Day event can equip themselves with information, which eases the decision-making process.

At the event, you’ll discover all there is to know about these facilities and what they can offer your loved ones; and One Senior Place will provide copies of the Senior Living Options Resource Guide to help visitors consider and assess the different housing scenarios available to seniors.

The annual event has been gaining notoriety for also being a lot of fun. Vendors will be on hand with related information, and there will be numerous door prizes and giveaways. As an extra treat (pardon the pun), chefs from participating communities will offer a broad selection of appetizers and desserts throughout the event, after which attendees can vote for their favorites to determine the winner of the “Best Chef in Senior Living” competition. Let’s see which community will score culinary bragging rights for 2023.

Senior Living Options Day is an opportunity for the entire family to gather information in a laid-back setting before the need of having to decide arises. Resources may be tight but armed with facts and with time on their side, families can make the best decision for all involved.
