Surely by now you’ve at least heard of the social networking sensation, Facebook. According to a recent study by Forrester Research, 60% of people over the age of 65 are online and nearly half are actively using the social networking website. Facebook allows users to create a personal profile, add other users as friends, exchange messages, share photos and more.

If you don’t already have a Facebook account, there are several reasons why you should consider creating one. Here are just five of the reasons joining over 900 million active Facebook users might be a good idea.

  1. Keeping in touch. Chances are your children and even grandchildren are using Facebook to share photos and memorable moments with family and friends. By connecting with them on Facebook, you’ll be automatically updated without much more of an effort than simply logging in to your account. Many times users even post photos and updates to Facebook directly from their mobile phones as they are happening, making it even easier for you to keep up to date with them.
  2. Finding old friends. Through the phenomenon of Facebook, users have reconnected with long-lost friends and colleagues. It might be fun to find and catch up with a childhood friend or college roommate that you’ve frequently wondered about but didn’t know how to connect with. And don’t worry; you don’t have to accept friend requests from anyone you don’t want to be in touch with.
  3. Ease of Use. While at first glance Facebook may appear to be intimidating, it is actually quite user friendly. After familiarizing yourself with a few key elements, like what “wall” (or “timeline”), “news feed” and “status update” mean, you’ll be comfortable using Facebook in no time. 4. Freebies and discounts. Just about every brand and business, including One Senior Place, is using social networking services, like Facebook, to promote their products and services. For you, this could mean special perks like being privy to early announcements about special events, sales, freebies and coupons exclusive to Facebook users and more. Simply “Like” the brand or business you want to keep up with and their updates will post to your “wall”.
  5. Socialization. Social networking is just that – social. You may enjoy using Facebook for entertainment purposes, like jokes, videos, games, news and more. If you play games and enjoy spending time on the computer browsing interesting articles and funny jokes, Facebook could be a great resource for you, as well as a means to share them with others too.
