Scott Reader DMDUnfortunately, for some of my patients, a time comes when I can no longer save all their teeth, do to many different factors.  An  option patients choose are dentures, which is a removable replacement for missing teeth.  A complete denture is used when all teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Complete dentures are conventional or immediate.  Immediate dentures are made before the teeth have been removed, so the patient doesn’t have to be without teeth during the healing period.  A drawback to immediate dentures is the bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removable.  More adjustments are needed for immediate dentures, so they fit properly.  They are generally considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures are made.

A conventional denture is ready for placement in the mouth about eight to twelve weeks after the teeth have been removed. At that time the gum tissue is properly healed, so the new dentures will need fewer adjustments for comfort.

Partial dentures are removable and consist of several “teeth” attached to a pink colored plastic base, which is connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth.  A bridge is another option for missing teeth, which is more permanent and cemented into place.  The important thing is the partial denture or bridge, fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from changing position.

An alternative to dentures are dental implants.  Between dental implants and bridges in the mouth patients will have a more comfortable, natural looking smile.  However, the cost is much greater.

A SNAP-ON Smile is a perfect alternative for missing, stained, crooked, worn, broken and discolored teeth, creating a beautiful smile.  This appliance fits over natural teeth, and is very comfortable to eat with, while looking natural.
